Apply for a new Canadian adult passport
Where do I apply for my first adult Canadian passport?
The adult passport application guide connects you to the current forms, evidence checklist, photo rules and submission options. It also helps existing passport holders check whether renewal is the better route. Application instructions differ by location and urgency, so use the official selector before making travel plans or arranging an office visit.
Where to begin
- Confirm whether you need a new application or can renew.
- Read the official document, photo, guarantor and reference requirements.
- Follow the submission instructions for your location and timing.
Before you open the official service
Canadians aged 16 or over use the adult passport application. For a new application in Canada, prepare the following alongside the completed form. Special circumstances can require additional documents.
- Provide proof of Canadian citizenship. A Canadian birth certificate must be original; for citizenship certificates, follow the original-versus-copy rules for its issue date and certificate number in the application instructions.
- Supporting identity document; copies must show both sides and carry the required guarantor or signing-official signature and date.
- Two identical passport photos, a qualified guarantor and two eligible references. The guarantor signs the application, one photo and relevant identity copies.
- Submit any Canadian passport or travel document you hold that is still valid. Check the official guarantor and reference rules before asking people to assist.
