Apply for an electronic travel authorization
How do I apply for a Canadian eTA?
Use IRCC’s official eTA page to check whether an electronic travel authorization is the right document for your trip. The page links to the application, status check and instructions after applying. An eTA and a visitor visa are different routes.
Where to begin
- Use the official travel-document checker before choosing an application.
- If the eTA route applies, follow “Apply online for an eTA.”
- Keep the confirmation privately and use IRCC’s status or follow-up instructions.
Before you open the official service
If the official travel-document checker confirms that the eTA route applies, have your passport, email address and accepted payment method ready before opening the form.
- Use the passport you intend to travel with; enter its number carefully.
- The application form cannot be saved, so prepare the requested information first.
- An approved eTA is linked to that passport. Check that the number in the approval email matches it.

What to check for your situation
Canadian citizens, permanent residents and other travellers may need different documents. An eTA does not replace a border decision.
Fees, processing times and document rules can change. This page helps you navigate; it does not confirm eligibility or replace the government’s instructions.
Practical questions
What does this route cost?
The official eTA application fee is CAD 7 and is non-refundable.
- Pay through the official application after completing the form. Check its accepted payment methods.
How long can this route take?
IRCC says most eTA applicants receive an email within minutes, but some applications take several days. This is not a promise of immediate approval.
- If extra processing is needed, IRCC says an email explaining next steps should arrive within 72 hours.
- Check your junk folder and follow any document request. Do not rely on obtaining an eTA at the last minute.
- Approval does not guarantee entry to Canada; the border officer checks entry requirements.
