Renew a Canadian permanent resident card

Prepared by · Sources checked

How do I renew my permanent resident card?

Use IRCC’s PR-card renewal route if you are a permanent resident in Canada and your card has expired or expires in less than nine months. Renewing a card is different from applying to become a permanent resident.

Where to begin

  1. Read PR-card eligibility and the renewal section of IRCC’s application guide.
  2. Start the PR-card application in the Permanent Residence Portal and complete IMM 5444.
  3. Follow the document checklist, upload it and supply the additional documents required for your circumstances.
  4. Pay the official fee through IRCC’s payment service and upload the receipt to the portal.
  5. Review, electronically sign and submit the application. Use the linked status service for updates.

Before you open the official service

  • Current PR card and renewal details
  • Official document checklist
  • Required supporting documents and fee receipt

Keep your actual documents and account details off this website. Use the official service’s current checklist before applying.

What to check for your situation

If you are outside Canada without a valid card, read the separate permanent resident travel document instructions. This guide does not assess residency compliance or guarantee a card before travel.

Fees, processing times and document rules can change. This page helps you navigate; it does not confirm eligibility or replace the government’s instructions.
