Halifax municipal elections and voting
When is the next municipal election in Halifax?
Halifax’s official election review refers to the next general municipal election in 2028. I have not verified an exact date. The previous general election was October 19, 2024; its old voting instructions are not current. Reviewed November 3, 2026.
Where to begin
- Choose the election level: federal, provincial or territorial, or municipal.
- Check the current election notice and your voter registration with the responsible election authority.
- Use that election’s official lookup for your voting options, polling place, identification and deadlines.
Before you open the official service
- The election level and province or territory; include the city for a municipal election.
- Use your address or postal code directly in the official election service to identify the correct riding and voting location.
Check registration, identification and the current election’s voting arrangements with the official authority.
What to check for your situation
Dates, candidates and voting arrangements can change. A scheduled general-election date is not a guarantee that an earlier election will not be called. Past election locations and deadlines are not instructions for the next election.
Voting rules depend on the election level and location. Do not reuse a previous election’s deadlines or polling address.
Election and voting questions
Where can I vote locally?
Use Halifax Regional Municipality Election Office’s current election notice and voting-location tool. The last reviewed general election was October 19, 2024 and has passed. Its old locations and hours must not be used as instructions to vote now.
- Open the official city election service.
- Select the current event and follow its voter instructions; contact the election office if the needed information is not published.
How do I register locally?
Check your municipal voter-list entry with Halifax Regional Municipality Election Office, using the current election’s instructions. Do not assume you can register on voting day; registration deadlines and procedures vary.
- Open the official city election service.
- Select the current event and follow its voter instructions; contact the election office if the needed information is not published.
What ID do I need locally?
Check Halifax Regional Municipality Election Office’s accepted-ID instructions for the current election. The federal ID list does not establish what this municipality accepts.
Who can vote locally?
Use Halifax Regional Municipality Election Office’s municipal eligibility rules. Residency, property-related conditions and school-board qualifications can be different; a federal voter registration does not confirm local eligibility.
Can I vote by mail locally?
Check with Halifax Regional Municipality Election Office whether mail or another alternative is offered for the current election, who qualifies, and the application and return deadlines. I have not verified arrangements for the next election.
Can I vote early locally?
Use Halifax Regional Municipality Election Office for current advance-voting dates and places. Do not reuse advance dates from the completed 2024 general election.
Can I get help voting locally?
Contact Halifax Regional Municipality Election Office about accessible locations and assistance for the current election. Confirm any advance-request requirements.
Can I vote online locally?
Online ballot availability must be checked for the actual municipal election. I have not verified it for the next Halifax election; online voter-list updates are not proof that online voting is offered.
Who is running locally?
Use Halifax Regional Municipality Election Office’s candidate list for the current election and your ward or district. A current council directory does not establish who is running.
Where are the municipal results?
Use Halifax Regional Municipality Election Office’s results page and check the election date and whether results are official or preliminary.
Check current by-elections
A by-election concerns a particular vacant seat, not every voter in the province or city. I have not verified an upcoming by-election for this area. Check the current notices from Halifax Regional Municipality Election Office.
