Appeal an EI reconsideration decision

Prepared by · Sources checked

How do I appeal an EI reconsideration decision?

A new appeal of an EI reconsideration decision goes to the Employment Insurance Board of Appeal. The usual deadline is 30 days after you receive the reconsideration decision. This is separate from requesting Service Canada’s first review.

Where to begin

  1. Identify the reconsideration decision and when you received it; use the reconsideration route first if you only have the original EI decision.
  2. Open the Board’s starting-an-appeal instructions and its Notice of Appeal form.
  3. Identify each decision being appealed, its date and record ID, explain your disagreement and prepare supporting documents.
  4. Complete, sign and date the notice. Submit online, or use the PDF route by mail or at a Service Canada office.
  5. Read the Board’s acknowledgement and hearing instructions. Review the appeal docket and contact your assigned Registry Officer about procedural needs.
  6. Send later evidence directly to the Board through its stated secure electronic or mail route, rather than dropping it at Service Canada.

Before you open the official service

  • Reconsideration decision and receipt date
  • Reasons for disagreement and supporting evidence
  • Preferred hearing format and any accommodation needs

Keep your actual documents and account details off this website. Use the official service’s current checklist before applying.

What to check for your situation

Since April 1, 2026, new first-level EI appeals go to the Board. Existing SST General Division cases started by March 31, 2026 continue there. Further appeals have a different route; obtain current instructions promptly if a deadline is close or has passed.

Fees, processing times and document rules can change. This page helps you navigate; it does not confirm eligibility or replace the government’s instructions.
