Travel while a work-permit renewal is pending

Prepared by · Sources checked

Can I travel outside Canada while my work-permit renewal is pending?

Travel and permission to work after returning are separate questions. If your permit has expired and you leave while your renewal is pending, IRCC says you may be admitted as a visitor and cannot resume work until the renewal is approved. A work permit is not a travel document.

Where to begin

  1. Confirm whether your original work permit will still be valid when you return and whether IRCC has approved the renewal. The expired-permit scenario is different from travel with a still-valid permit.
  2. For travel after the original permit expires, check the renewal decision before returning. If it remains pending and you return as a visitor, wait for approval before resuming work.
  3. Check the passport and visa or eTA requirements for your citizenship and travel method. Entry remains a border decision.

Before you open the official service

  • Original permit expiry and renewal application status
  • Passport and the applicable re-entry documents identified by IRCC

Keep your actual documents and account details off this website. Use the official service’s current checklist before applying.

What to check for your situation

This guide does not decide individual status or guarantee re-entry. Do not infer continued work rights for someone whose original permit is still valid from the expired-permit scenario.

Fees, processing times and document rules can change. This page helps you navigate; it does not confirm eligibility or replace the government’s instructions.
