Moving in Canada: an address-change checklist

Start with a private list of the accounts you use. Update CRA, applicable Service Canada benefits and any active IRCC application separately, then follow your province or territory’s rules for health and driving records. Check local services and private providers too; one address update does not notify everyone.

Start with the records you actually use

Moving creates a mixture of tasks: some protect an ongoing payment or application, some update identity records, and others keep everyday services running. You do not need every item on a national checklist. You need a short list that matches your circumstances.

Create your list in a private note or spreadsheet. For each organization, record the account or service name, the official change route, any deadline you find and whether the change is complete. Keep confirmation numbers in that private record. This website does not need your old address, new address or account details.

The Government of Canada address-change directory is the starting point for federal services. It explains that departments must be contacted separately. Use the checklist below to organize the work, then follow each department's current instructions.

Separate your federal updates

  • Personal tax and benefit records: use CRA's personal address-change instructions. CRA says an address cannot be changed through NETFILE. Do not assume submitting a return completes the address change.
  • Service Canada programs: if you receive or use a program such as EI, CPP or OAS, open its specific route from the federal directory. A CRA update is not confirmation that the program record changed.
  • An active immigration or citizenship application: use IRCC's change-of-address process. Choose the route for the application rather than treating a status check as an update.
  • A business you operate: review CRA's business-information routes separately from your personal account. Check which business address or contact field is changing.

Before signing in, check that the destination is the official website. If you cannot use the online service, follow that department's published alternative. Avoid opening a second application merely to correct contact details.

Check your province, territory and municipality

Health coverage, driving records and vehicle records are handled through regional systems. Their update rules are not interchangeable. Choose your location in Provinces & cities, then open the relevant official health or transport service. Check the allowed channel, required information and current deadline directly.

For an Ontario move, the linked Ontario address-change guide below explains the provincial route. For a move between provinces or territories, start with the destination authority: you may need a registration or transfer process rather than a simple edit to the old record. This checklist does not determine when your old coverage ends or your new coverage begins.

Local tasks depend on the property and your role. A homeowner might need to check property-tax and utility correspondence. A tenant may need to update a parking permit or another city service. A business moving premises should check whether its licences or permitted use are tied to the address. Confirm those questions with the municipality before relying on a generic moving list.

A compact checklist to keep privately

Private organizationsEmployer, bank, insurer, utilities, school or other services you useCompletion status

Mail forwarding can help with delivery, but it should not be treated as proof that an organization's underlying record has been changed. Check the record with the organization itself.

For example, a person who moves within Ontario while receiving a federal benefit can use three separate rows: the benefit program, CRA and applicable Ontario records. Completing one row leaves the others open. That is an illustrative planning example, not a statement that those are the only tasks for every Ontario move.

Common moving questions

Does changing my CRA address update every government service?

No. CRA says it does not share your address changes with other government departments. Use the federal directory and your own account list to find the separate updates.

Should I change an address before or after moving?

Check the effective-date and timing instructions for each service. There is no single date that this guide can safely apply to every department, licence and benefit.

What if I am moving out of Canada?

An address update alone does not resolve tax residence, benefit eligibility or immigration questions. Use the relevant official guidance and seek qualified advice where you need a decision about your own circumstances.

Change your address after moving in Canada

There is no single government address update that reaches every department. Make a list of the services you use, then update each through its own official route.

Change your personal address with CRA

Tell CRA when your address changes so it can send correspondence and maintain your account information. The official guide provides account, telephone and postal routes, with separate rules for someone acting on your behalf. Updating CRA is a distinct task from changing an Ontario licence or health-card record; review each relevant government service after a move.

Guide 3 / Ontario

Update your address with Ontario services

Ontario's address-change hub maps a move to the records that may need updating, including a driver's licence, vehicle permit and health card. Different products have different rules and deadlines. Use the official instructions for each one rather than assuming a single transaction updates every government service. The hub also explains when an in-person step is needed.

Check an IRCC application status

IRCC uses different accounts and trackers for different application types. Its official status guide asks what you applied for and, where relevant, how you submitted it before showing the appropriate route. Use that selector instead of guessing which portal holds your case. A general processing estimate is separate from the actual status of your application.

Keep these distinctions in mind

  • Use the Ontario address-change instructions to see which provincial records are covered.
  • Update CRA separately using its official instructions.
  • If you have an active immigration application, use IRCC’s change-of-contact process for that application. A status check alone does not change an address.

These steps are a starting sequence, not a mandatory or complete list for every person. Check the official guidance for your situation.
