Understand an Ontario eviction notice

Prepared by · Sources checked

My landlord wants to evict me in Ontario. What can I do?

A notice and an eviction order are different. For a tenancy covered by Ontario’s Residential Tenancies Act, disagreeing with a landlord’s notice does not itself mean you must leave.

Where to begin

  1. Identify whether you received a landlord’s notice, a Board application or an eviction order.
  2. Read the notice’s reason and instructions; the response depends on the notice and stage.
  3. Use Navigate Tribunals Ontario through the official process page to find the route for your situation.

  • The notice or order, its dates and your tenancy agreement. Keep these private.

Keep your actual documents and account details off this website. Use the official service’s current checklist before applying.

What to check for your situation

The Act does not cover every arrangement, including sharing a kitchen or bathroom with the landlord. Some applications have different hearing or review procedures. Get advice specific to your situation.

Fees, processing times and document rules can change. This page helps you navigate; it does not confirm eligibility or replace the government’s instructions.
